Gas prices and Essential Transportation

by Azreel | April 26th, 2007

Gas prices keep going up, and it’s starting to have a noticeable effect on our budget.  I commute 50 miles one way to work, five days a week. Driving my pickup, that’s a full tank evey three days.  It costs over $80 right now to fill up, and it’s still going up.

The question becomes, what to do to find cheaper reliable transportation?

Public transit isn’t an option: it’s unreliable, and doesn’t go where I need it to anyway.  Diesel gets better mileage, and is now the same price (likely to become cheaper as gasoline demand goes up) so an older mercedes may be a decent option, as well as a newer VW TDI, though those are rare and pricey.  Prius, and Insights and other hybrid vehicles are an interesting option, but again, way too pricey and hard to get.  Besides, I’d rather wait for the plug-in versions to become available in the US (they’ve had them in Japan for some time now) .

I never should have sold my motorcycle.  I keep coming back to that option.  90mpg is hard to ignore, plus it’s got the performance I love.
