New Jersy Moves to Outlaw Bicycles

by Azreel | June 20th, 2007

It’s another case of “Legislation Gone Wild” – it seems lawmakers, specifically Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, weren’t paying attention when they modified a piece of legislation what would make quick release front bicycle wheels illegal.

Just recently, Assembly bill A2686, which was introduced over a year ago in February of 2006, was passed by the New Jersy assembly of representatives by an overwhelming vote of 77-3. Legislators, it seems, were bored.

First, one has to ask the question WHY would someone see the need to ban something as useful as a bicycle wheel. But, if you are asking that question, it’s obvious that you are not thinking of the children. PLEASE WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN???

Oh no, it’s not enough that children are required to wear a helmet while riding their two wheeled death traps. Heaven forbid they forget to fasten their quick release front rim. Therefore, it must be made illegal to make children’s bicycles with quick release wheels.

When lawmakers made some critical changes to the law, they made a small but crucial mistake when they increased the size of the rims that are made illegal. Now, ALL quick release rims would be made illegal in NJ. That’s right – all of you mountain bikers in New Jersy bette r listen up: they’re trying to take away your wheels.

It gets worse though. This legislation is SO poorly written, that even regular bolt on rims would be made illegal. In fact, there are no rims made by any manufacturer in the world that would compl with the proposed law.

New Jersy has effectively proposed a law that would ban ALL bicycles. Just think how safe those children will be now.
