Well, Liberty has just finished her second month of heartworm treatments. Her mange is gone, tapeworm is gone, she’s flea and tick free, and she’s really coming into her own.
She’s still pretty shy, especially around men. It will take time for her to completely regain her confidence, but we’re working with her every day. I’ve started taking her to the dog park, just for walks. It’s still not safe for her to be very active since the heartworms aren’t gone yet, but the increased socialization is definitely helping her.
Interestingly enough, she’s having to learn how to be a dog. From what we can figure out about her past, she had very little exposure to people that wasn’t abusive, and she’s had no exposure to other dogs. It was almost comical watching the dogs at the park try to engage her and get her to play, and have her just stand there perplexed. She’d look at the other dog and then back at me, seeming to ask “Dad, what do they want?”
It’s going to take some time, but it’s been so amazing watching her grow into a real dog instead of the terrified quivering pile of fur that showed up on my doorstep a few months ago.
